mwah

hello, i have watched this movie a few days ago and i almost forget itbecause i didn't like it much... this movie is having not a good butalso not a bad story. it was kind of weird what was going on in thismovie things like a guy that is recording people and if he touches theTV while he is watching them they fly back and a few secs. later he cancontrol them. but the movie was a little fun to watch because it was abit original. nowadays you have always the same type of horror movies imean you see much horror movies with teens that get killed and thingslike that but this movie was different. and there is also one othercrazy thing and that is the end...i ain't gonna tell how it ends...ifyou wanna know how it ends just watch the movie. or on youtube ;-)greets Sven

Really not worth watching it

Didn't watch the whole movie, after 30 minutes I had had it. It is ashame that Christian Slater took a role in this movie.Christian Slater's only real role in the movie is to get spy camfootage of teen girls undressing in locker rooms from one of the mainteens in the movie who works at the local news station. Slater is inmaybe 3 or 4 scenes in the movie and has no importance whatsoever inthe movie.Playback begins with several high school friends who are shooting afilm project for a journalism class assignment. Their film is based ona local legend; a teenager who murdered his family. But this plotsimply makes "Playback" really boring. It's just another suckingteenagers-horror movie.

My review of Playback....

This movie dives right in at the deep with the character Harlan Diehl, covered in blood and dirt, moving through a house with a video camera. While cutting between the normal lens of the filming camera and thehand held device, you hear screams of anguish in the background. It wasa very promising and brutal start. It shortly drifts into mediocrity, except for the role of Quinn, whosoon becomes effected by the video footage he watches while doing someresearch for Julian. In mean time, Julian and Riley run around, liketeenagers do, trying to find more information on the killer HarlanDiehl, much to the disapproval of Julian's mother.Enter officer Frank Lyons, an average cop with some questionable extracurricular activities. Christian Slater actually plays a very smallrole in the movie. There's an old saying - "there are no small partsonly small actors." Unfortunately, the later applies to Slater's partin the whole proceedings, which is a real shame as Slater has beengreat in certain roles over the years. On the plus side, the movie has some decent eerie moments and actuallymade me jump at one point. The visual effects are good and there's abit of blood along the way too. The bad points, although they don'tspoil the movie, the acting isn't great, but the story keeps youinterested, and it does get a little predictable towards the end. With a storyline based on the notion of the ability of photography tocapture souls, it goes one step further with the use of video and as itturned out, this movie was better than average. For reviews head over to http://mavensmovievaultofhorror.blogspot.com/

Christian Bale's best performance yet!

A riveting story unfolds totally unexpected as we watch the epicjourney of a group of high school janitors digging into theirforgotten, colorful past. Christian Bale is most impressive as theleader of the pack who unwittingly unlock an Evil that exposes andconfronts their homosexuality and sends them on a wild trip to the darkcorners of hell and back. Possessing its victims through repeatedcos-play and using them for homo erotic purposes, it closes in on eachtroubled soul, threatening to expose and possess their deepest, darkestsecret. The whole cast actually delivers in this immensely underratedfamily drama. Definitely one of the best movies of 2012 and Bale willlikely be nominated for an Oscar for his impressive performance as gayjanitor from hell.

Playback will never hit Theaters

I was not expecting much but the coming to theaters March 3rd post gaveme some hope and I also thought it would be kind of like "The Ring",but this is just another DTV ball of crap. The acting was harsh and thecharacters were so random and extremely hard to care for. Half the timeI could barely even recognize who was getting offed so the empathyscale is a 0. So many questions are left unanswered and plot pointsunexplained. The adding of Christian Slater's character just cheapenedthe entire film, when is the last time one of his movies hit the bigscreen? I really usually love & enjoy horror/thrillers but this oneseemed really forced with very little thought in the direction area. Ofcourse the ending is just another cheap horror cliché, with theirintent for a sequel already primed I'm sure. If you have nothing to dogo for it , but I warned you. This is a VERY generous 5/10 Just to be fair, movies I watch on the net I add a extra point to justto put things in the right prospective.

Not The Ring, by any means, but there is a shower scene...

Promising beginning with intense acting, mixed in with that foundfootage vibe, looks good. Oh, Damn...and queue the cliché, teenagefriends which will inevitably meet their demise. No, but all in all not a bad film. A bit tired of the dodgy camera thatalways seems to have some issues recording though. I get that it'ssupposed to be a hand-held, character used, video recorder without theglitch here an there to let me know it. Also, if it needs to be done, then just leave the actual film camera (the one that isn't supposed tobe in the film) alone. That all said, they had me at the shower scene. Then some more partyinghappens, teenage shenanigans ensue, and 'oh hey, it looks likeChristian Slater…oh wait, it is!' he sleazes it up, bring in someblood, insert antagonist's history s*** goes down and bobs your uncle. And just one spoiler for the end: Don't read if not wanting some thingsspoiled! You've been warned! So, why oh why, does teenage possessingbaddie need to set up a room with a T.V., while the "just searching foranswers" good guy sits tied up in another room, when he could have justvideoed him with his handy cam, which he does later anyway? Oh, becausethe battery might die! Silly me! Then use you're cell phone…there yago. Next time just use the phone.

Freaking amazing!!!!! Best movie ever!!!

This movie is freaking amazing! And let me tell you why stranger who isreading this fantabulous review! First Christian bale did an amazingjob with this movie, the plot was deep and you will be on the edge ofyour seat the whole time. Bale's acting was spot on and he couldportray a heavy handed alcoholic cop like it was his actual life! Andit has that girl from those Disney shows in it. The blow jobs in thatmovie actually seemed like they were happening in my own pants!Phenomenal! J.J.Abrams did a freaking amazing job directing this motherof movies. Since this stupid review is too short I'm going to trailthis on for longer. But I will say if I could pay any price to see thisagain I would pay 100, no 500 dollars to see this again since it issoooooooo great! I'm very surprised that it has such low ratings! Whatare all the review people? Freaking nerds from 4chan? Seriously theyprobably all are! Well I guess me and the rest of the people who havelives can actually review this!

i was happy before this came along

The only thing great about this movie is probably the over rated movieposter. The movie itself was absolute crap with glitter wrapping on it.i hope to never ever come across another load of crap again. The plotwas none existent, the characters where incredibly watered down to thepoint where you will find yourself not caring about them at any leveland the scares where just loud noises like a loud truck or dog suddenlybarking. This is not even a movie you consider if you where bored.Majority of the time i found myself looking away from screen and justwondering how the directors can get away with releasing movie likethis. At the end of it i felt i had wasted over 1:30 minutes of my lifefor no reason. Do your self a favor and don't bother watching thiscrap.

Scott Weinberg 2013-05-11 08:10:41

On the bright side, the movie gets less irritating with each passing murder.

Simply Ignore ..........

Playback – TRASH IT (C) Playback is a horror film with very littlepotential. The whole story of devil transforming from generation togeneration via screen is little too much even for this indie horror.First thing first I still cannot believe that Christian Slater willtake a role of pedophile in a C graded movie. It's better to not doanything rather than shaming his name (whatever is left after "Alone inthe Drak") into dirt. It stars some of the not very famous yet goodlooking tween stars Toby Hemingway, Jonahtan Keltz, Johnny Pacar,Jennifer Missoni, Luke Bonczyk, Alessandra Torresani and AmbyrChilders. Overall, it's a gruesome time passer but bad lighting and notvery impressive story and performance makes you bore. Simply ignorethis one.

Almost B-movie material

Plot A: A person, for his Journalism class, looks into the mysteriousevents surrounding a local murder that happened in 1994.Sub-Plot: The person ends up looking for this baby who survived the1994 murder, and it turns out to be him. Or something along thoselines.Plot B: A spirit inside an old movie possesses people and goes on amurder spree. Also: The only active cop for 90% of the movie is a pedophile who hasthe murderer put video cameras in girls' rooms. The one girl who thecop watches seems to be a whore. The murderer seems like he didn't evenneed to become possessed in the first place.---It could have been a whole lot better. As an excuse-plot, it's tooconvoluted. As a story-plot, it's not very well done. 1 star. The characters aren't that good. They are the typical 'teenage horrormovie' archetypes. If that, because cardboard has more personality thanmost of them. 1 star.A couple scenes didn't make sense. I may have missed the scene, butsomehow the spirit jumped from the killer to this other character'sgirlfriend and then back to the killer. The one girl when she finds outthe cop has been watching her goes to the cop's house to have sex withhim. No one seems to know about the baby who survived the murder, andin fact it seems no one knows the baby even survived when you wouldthink that's something that would wind up somewhere in the news. 1star.Very little actual suspense or 'horror'. No stars on this front. The saving grace is that I watched it for the gore, and it had arespectable amount of gore. Two stars.---They should have made it as either a B-movie gore-fest,Parody/deconstruction with psychological undertones, or a decent-budgethorror film. I mean they could afford Christopher Slater, don't tell methey couldn't afford someone to read the script before it was filmed.

This was a strange film that i had mixed feelings on.

This Film is nothing special which i'm sure allot of people could telland it is a low budget movie too which i'm sure allot of people cantell and i didn't really like the idea of the movie either, possessionthrough a computer by an Evil spirit,i will admit the idea is creepyand a little chilling but i just didn't like the idea,i guess its justnot my sort of thing, movies about possession and people turningEvil, and although i didn't like that idea i liked a couple of thecharacters in the film and because i liked them i guess they kept mewatching and i liked the fact the movie had some mystery behind itbecause i like a little mystery in films, that's one of the genre's ilike but i'm afraid the mystery did not save this film, but for somereason i can't hate this film,i don't know what it is but even thoughits a little bad i just can't bring myself to destroy this film becauseiv'e seen much worse and the actors did the best they could,in myopinion they all did okay and none of the characters annoyed me eitherwhich is an upside because usually characters in horror films annoy mebut none of these people did.i will admit i found two of the guys inthe film a little creepy but it least they weren't annoying. This film is quite weird its about people who get possessed when theystare into a camera for long enough.the camera flickers and they gettaken over by the evil spirit of a dead guy who had murdered people inthe past. That's mainly what this film is about. It all started with amurder and now the Evil guy that's dead want's to take over everybodyelse and he possesses one guy quite early on in the film and then hesets hidden cameras around everywhere in peoples houses because hisplan is to get them to stare into the camera for long enough and thenthey will become possessed and turn Evil just like him and one by onethey all become like that except for the two main characters, the leadguy and his girlfriend which i will admit i liked,i never had a problemwith either of them but i have to say i didn't like any of theirfriends and i thought all the characters in this movie wereunderdeveloped so they didn't have much personality but that wasn't amajor problem for me its only when a movie gets really boring or stupidor annoying that i have a major problem and this movie didn't do thatwhich is a plus side but at the same time i can't call this a goodmovie. It was Okay at best, and the movie had some good kills and somegood blood and gore but other than that it didn't really have anythinggoing for it and i did not like the story, maybe if these actors weregiven better roles and more to do it would have been a better film butsadly the movie did not interest me much especially the scenes in thehigh school because those were pretty boring and nothing much happenedthere, all we ever got in those scenes was allot of talking by theCharacters about their school work but nothing interesting everhappened there.the party scene was okay but again it had nothing to do with the storyand in my opinion the best part out of the whole movie is the partright at the end when the two guys fight each other. Johnny Pacar'sgirlfriend gets kidnapped by the Evil guy who used to be his friend andJohnny's character goes looking for her and he gets kidnapped by thesame guy and taken to the old abandoned house where the murders tookplace in the past and he and his girlfriend escape and The Evilpossessed guy stops them from leaving and Johnny and the Evil guy havea vicious fight in the front yard, and to be honest with everyone that'sthe only part of the movie that i liked because i thought it was a goodfight that the two guys had, they both threw some good punches at eachother and you get some good Action and some good blood too.so in myopinion that was the best and most interesting part in the whole film, ithought it was a good fight and i thought it was well edited,it mayhave been a short fight but i still liked that part and Johnny Pacarwas a bad-ass the guy can fight. but the rest of the movie i didn'tcare much for.To sum things up this is not a good film but you do getsome good Action right at the end which made the film watchable. 4/10for the effort.

Nickels misses the mark with this design of voyeurism and possession, unable to launch his idea with an inspiring sense of madness or even basic boogeyman clarity.

An Eye Into Depravity

I've read the reviews here and I've watched the movie. What I came awayfrom the viewing experience with was that yes, it does take some of itsmoments away from other movies in the horror genre but it has enough ofits own bends and twists to make it an alright experience should youchoose to watch it. I often hear people writing about characters andplots and all the other rubbish associated with movies. My advice wouldbe to come into this without all that baggage. This movie isn't amodern day adaptation of a book for the screen, it isn't a great playor a cinematic revelation. It is a horror movie, designed to shock you, make you squirm and jump and maybe occasionally marvel at thewickedness you see on the screen. What should be noticed is thedepravity of the main characters. Total indifference to the feelings orwell being of others as long as they can fulfill their own selfish andoften brutal needs. Along the way, the implication of other unseendepraved people who need their fix gets implied too. What you are leftwith is a small picture of society in which people forget theboundaries of "civilized" society and are doing nothing more thanacting as "normal" while being anything but. Yeah, I know, it may be abit deep but if you look at in that way then you might just be shockedat how "real" the characters in the movie really can be. Just thinkabout that girl you see on the street or that cop that just drove pastyou while you were out walking and think about how every person youpass by in the course of your day might have some deep, dark desire orpassion or obsession that they secretly act upon when the eyes ofcivilized society aren't watching. There is a thin line between beingcivilized and being what society would call a monster. Sometimes themost hideous things are the things that we don't see as hideous, abominable or despicable. The things that we don't pay attention to,the subtle links between this and that which nobody pays attention to.That is until someone notices something and starts to pull back themask of the monster. Movies like this offend because they are so closeto real. We can see the potential for someone to act that way becausepeople have acted that way. In every story, there is a purl of truth.Think about that as you watch this movie. Blood and gore aside, horrorgenre aside, there is a message. Whether you choose to see the messageis up to you.

Don't believe the hype....If there is any!

What a heap of crap! That should be enough of a review as their are noredeeming features to this mess. The worst thing of all is how it's marketed to suck you in to see it inthe first place, I mean IMDb's description 'A cop investigates the caseof a missing local teen.....' is very misleading - yes a cop doesinvestigate - for about 5 minutes of the movie. In fact the only reasonthis description is used is because the cop in question is played byChristian Slater, and of course it's Slater's name that carries themovie, the only reason why you might want to watch this. That being said, Slater's role is very minimal, he basically plays asick pervert cop for a very brief part of the movie - yup, not theimpression the description would have you believe. The story is predictable from the start, contains only 'jump' scaresand well.........nothing more to say really, this really is crap. Whathappened to your career Slater?

Nitzan Havoc 2013-04-30 04:34:39

Has its moments, worth watching.

I don't usually do this, but some of you might stumble upon a review byIMDb username tlsmith-569-716188 as the visible review on this film'spage. Aside from mistaking Christian Slater for Christian Bale, it'sobviously biased and written by either someone who took part in themaking of this film, or someone to related to such a person. Do yourpart and click "no". We deserve more integrity.Having said that, let's get back to "Playback". I must say that while Idid enjoy watching it, I couldn't help but finding the screenplay andstory lacking. The idea is nice while not all that original (The Ringhas already given us "evil from a videotape" and this was simply toosimilar), but the twist was too obvious and predictable. A good plottwist is one where the balance between the hints given and the elementof surprise upon the discovery is kept. In this case - the hints weretoo thick, and the surprise was gone. That might be because I'm aHorror freak and have watched many Horror and Thriller films, but Ican't help but expect more. The second thing, which was really sad for me, was Christian Slater'sroll. Oh my, how the great ones have fallen and been humbled to a shadybackground role of a semi-pedophile creep. I'd hate to think that afterhis illustrious career Slater has been degraded to his role here.Depressing.However, while not being the best film ever, Playback is far from beingbad. The effects and cinematography were very impressive, the originalindie-rock soundtrack was great and is in my opinion good enough topurchase if available, and the way some of the scenes shot by the kidsin the movie end up realized by the killer was very nice. But the bestthing about this film is for sure Toby Hemingway's acting (and a greatjob by the make-up department). Hemingway was superb, and I lookforward to seeing him in other films! All in all, like I've mentioned, Playback wasn't the best film ever, nor the worst. It had its moment, and while it could have been a lotbetter - it could have been a lot worse too. I personally rate it a 6,but recommend that you give it a shot.

Michaelshotton 2013-04-28 20:48:02

Alright but in the end a bit rubbish.

I wasn't really expecting much from this movie, just a normal every dayteen killing slasher. It's all horror movies seem to be these days yetI still can't keep myself away from them. Guess I'm just waiting forthat one movie to blow me away. Sadly, this was not that movie. Not a terrible story line, once it started it had me intriguedinstantly but the plot never really explains the story-line. It neverexplains why that guy is killing everyone since it turns out he is notthe baby in the cot at the start. It turns out the good guy is the babyin the cot. It ends suddenly too and doesn't show anything after allthat happens. Was an alright watch, won't watch it again in a hurry butI wouldn't throw it to the bottom of my pile.

Rich Wright 2013-04-28 12:12:01

I don't think I'd play it back...

Just so you're aware, putting Christian Slater top billing is a bit ofa misnomer... His total screen time add up to just over five minutes. Ido love his last scene, though... It's very, um, 'uncompromising'.I should also inform you that this indeed is a very silly storyline, and not one to raise the hairs on your neck. So rather than blinding uswith science or having loads of JUMP moments, it chooses to go mentalwith the gore... and every last drop of blood and piece of dismemberedbrain is wrung out and presented for our viewing pleasure. It's notgreat cinema, but at least it distracts from some of the dafter bits.Possessing teenagers through a static TV screen, indeed. And as much as I like a bleak ending, it's got to the point where ifthe evil dude doesn't get up after an apparently fatal gun wound andtear the hero's head off in the finale, it's a major surprise. Come ondirectors, give us some cheeriness in these depressing days (neverthought I'd hear myself say those words)

One of the most exciting films of recent years

I went into this movie expecting to be a bit disappointed. I'm truly astickler when it comes to horrors and thrillers. I will say that theonly reason I even went was because one of my closest friendspractically forced me into it.What I found was that I could not be happier with a movie. After hiswork in the batman franchise, Christian Slater did a wonderful jobkeeping me on the edge of my seat. In fact, if I had to guess, I'd sayhis work in this film might be the most realistic, believable actingjob in recent history, far surpassing Christian's former costar, HeathLedger's performance in The Dark Knight. My only beef about the film was that it was sometimes hard to followthe intricate movements of the actor's index fingers, although Isuppose its not fair to deduct points for something that I assume is arare fetish that is only shared by complete sociopaths and a largepercentage of field mice.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen

This is my first review here on IMDb, I saw this movie yesterday and it was so stupid but so stupid! It wasfull of clichés and a predictable story! Some things didn't even makesense. I won't spoil anything if you want to see it, one thing thatmade me want to watch this movie was slater but not even him could savethis movie! Seriously I knew how the movie was going to end when theystarted doing investigation. And they changed the camera angles from some shots when they showedthem a second time, you'll see what I mean towards the end. If you seeit try to catch all the clichés... I actually wished that I would havedecided not to see it! There is actually one part on the movie that heis supposed to be filming with his phone and the screen turns black andhe just keeps going. The only good thing about this movie is the girls that's why I gave ita 2/10. I'm 19 years old...
